For now project Opie is setting in my closet. Being unemployed naturally supplies limitations, and for now Opie will have to wait.
Needs for "opie":
Keyboard
CPU Fan
Lid plastics
hard drive (40Gb would be acceptable for XP)
mouse pad (Basically the entire palm rest assembly)
My unemployment ended in early November, I am a "99er" I have sent out nearly 200 resume's since I graduated in August, with only 6 or 7 call backs. Things are tough here in Michigan, but I do see things getting better slowly.
The new UIA extension that congress passed was not for those of us who had exhausted our benefits, it only extended benefits for those who are currently receiving benefits (Limited to 99 weeks yet). Congress would need to add a new tier for me to receive any new benefits, and sad to say, I do not see that happening.
Michigan says that unemployment has gone down, what they are NOT telling you is that those of us who have exhausted our benefits are NOT included in the unemployment numbers. The real number is much higher, (seasonal jobs reduce this number as well) but they wont admit to there being a problem. We have just "fallen" out of the system and vanished, therefor we do not exist. Tell that to the bill collectors! LOL!
I have two desktop computers coming (Both FREE!) soon that I will go through and get ready to find a new home for. One is and older Widows 98 machine (Still works!) The other...all I know is that it is a Windows XP tower, no telling what it is that I might receive?
I'll try to keep this updated, I'm searching for jobs daily on-line. Some days I find ten jobs to apply for, the next none.
Life is hard, God is good!

Acer Aspire 5100-5840 Update AGAIN! AGAIN!! DONE for real!

As soon as I tried to get on line through my wireless I knew there was a problem. I'm going to spare you with all of the BORING details, my fix was installing the latest driver from Atheros "Click Here for site" The wireless card in my Acer 5100 refused to even identify my network with WPA/ WPA2 encryption, but connected right away if I set the network to open with no encryption. Installing the correct driver will instantly fix this issue.
The Acer has been running like a champ for the last week or so now, with all of the upgrades, and a clean install of Vista, it is running like a champ. Finally! I think this thing MAY be finished! LOL!
Later all!
Acer Aspire 5100-5840 Update AGAIN!

After the last of the upgrades the notebook ran fine for a day or so, then started crashing on me. After some messing around, I ran Disc Check, that found some errors on the disc and repaired them, I then restarted the system and all is well once again.
**Um YEAH! Done? NOT! The TL-62 that I installed was not properly recognized, this caused the computer to continually crash. I did a system restore figuring it would help, NOT!
I reinstalled the TL-52 and after a bit of research, decided to update the BIOS and see what would happen, THAT did the trick! I reinstalled the TL-62 and the system now sees it properly and it is stable. The system is now also completely restored and updated.
Kind of fun playing with this thing, and frustrating as well, but I won in the end!**
Computers, love to hate them! LOL!
At least this toy is all done!
Later all!
Upgrades on this machine in the last four years:
From 2Gb of ram to 4Gb (3.3 Recognized)
From a TL-52 (1.6Gb) Processor to a TL-61 (2.1Gb)
From a 250Gb, 5,400Rpm, 4Mb Cache Hard Drive, to a 320Gb, 7,200Rpm, 16 Mb Cache Drive
At least it is DONE! No more upgrades to do! There is a slightly faster processor, but 200MHz is NOT worth the cost of that processor, not now anyhow!
Later all!

CRASH!

I can't remember the last time I lost a machine? I am SO O.C. about keeping things clean and tuned! I'm running system restore now, this is going to take some MAJOR time! I think I will be a little more careful next time I see a 65% come up! LOL! DOIH!
I'm thinking that what caused the problem was that I didn't restart after running another cleanup program, that would do it! Remember to re-start after running each of your cleanup programs, or, you could end up like me and do a two hour system restore. The reason for the length of time? I want the file tree's to be left in tact, I didn't back up audio files that I should have! That is MY bad!
The Acer Aspire 5251-1513 is a nice little machine, the only upgrade I have made is to the memory, up to 3Gb from 2Gb, not a massive increase by any means, this computer will run up to 8Gb of ram, eventually I will get it there, but for now, there isn't enough money to make that happen.
What eventual upgrades?
1. 8Gb of Ram
2. A 7,200Rpm, 16Mb Cache, 500Gb hard Drive
3. A faster Processor
It will be some time before this happens, I need to have a job first!
Have fun everyone!

The last upgrade

I first added the 4Gb of ram, the a 320Gb-7200rpm-16Mb Cache hard drive, upgraded to Windows 7, and finally today I added a AMD TL-62 processor. It had been three years since I had made any changes to the notebook, there is always something else that needs to be done.
All combined the upgrades netted a HUGE performance boost. I did it over the last three years, when the parts became affordable. The only thing I can't upgrade is the graphics performance. The computer can allocate 512Mb of ram for the graphics processor, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to adjust it? The highest setting I can see is 256Mb? So no way to increase that.
The computer has been enjoyable to use, no major problems at all, I haven't even had to do a system restore yet.
There are a few tweaks I'd like to make, but for the most part I am done. I need to find out how to adjust the video performance, the "last" thing to be done

ZE5607WM Update
So after tearing the notebook down, there is a list of parts that need to be replaced.
1. CPU fan
2. Lid Plastics
3. Keyboard
4. Palm rest assembly
I'm looking into a replacement unit that is dead as a donor, time to start looking!

Rebuild of a H.P. Pavilion ZE5607WM Code name "Project Opie" LOL

It will need to be torn down, cleaned up and a new palm rest and keyboard installed, along with a fresh copy of XP Home SP3, there are three fans that need to be looked at also, they're a bit noisy. Not a big project overall, but it's nice to still see it running, it's still a very usable notebook. I purchased this one ten years ago? At that time it was $1,000, it has made its way through the family and will be coming back my way for a little while.
I started the first steps of the re-build, I did the initial cleaning of the heat sinks, then I wiped the drive, and am in the process of re-installing the operating system, XP Home SP3, I think I'll stop after the first round of 99 updates, I've had enough computer repair for the day.
Something doesn't seem right with how it is running, I'll need to see if there is a chipset driver that needs to be installed to improve the performance.
Did I mention that I am a nerd? LOL! you guessed eh?

Fixing a Dell Latitude D600

The laptop had a 40Gb drive in it, that is being increased to 120Gb, partitioned to 40Gb C:/80Gb D:, a far roomier drive for all those things that get installed in the system.
After putting the computer back together, I suddenly had a memory error, a memory card went bad? I was lucky this time, I had an extra 512Mb SODIMM laying around for it! So back to 1024Mb of ram it goes.No real problems here, after the repairs, reinstall the operating system, drivers, and the nearly 1200 updates and it will be done!
For some reason it will still not recognize the power supply? and it will not charge the battery? I know the power jack is installed properly, so no idea what the issue is?
There were no issues with the drivers, they are all still available on the Dell website, THANK YOU DELL!
I should have this one done later in the afternoon, still have Firefox and a rather large program to install on it. I believe I will install Microsot Security Tools on this machine also, it has unattended updating, a good thing for a lot of people!
Still having fun!

Fixing a Compaq Armada E500

Today's project is an older Compaq Armada E500, it needs a new hard drive, which will mean installing the operating system and all the drivers.
The computer is my Aunt's, not a bad machine at all, and she is used to it. I would have liked to max out the ram, but what I had on hand didn't work, so it will stay at 256Mb for now. I ended up installing windows with a pre-SP1 XP disc, I WILL remedy that problem.
The only issue I had was finding the drivers for her Netopia SWL2300N 3D Reach wireless card (Download drivers here) The drivers were a pain to find, hope this helps!
So after a FEW hours of updating and cleaning, I sent the computer back to my Aunt, it works GREAT now! It does however need a new battery, I tried the "freezing" trick and it did now work.
Have fun!

Project "Terminator"

I believe I am going to test run this machine with Microsoft Security Essentials, a free program that is supposed to replace anti-virus and malware programs? I guess I'll see? It seems to be self updating also?
So, project Terminator, and Asus Motherboard, AMD Duron 1.20GHz processor, and 1,024Mb of ram. I know this doesn't sound like much, but in its day it was considered to be "bad" LOL!
There are the normal programs that will be installed, Firefox, Open Office, The Gimp, Audacity, Paint.net, Auslogics Disk Defrag, Auslogics Registry Defrag, Auslogics Registry Cleaner (Think I like these guy's?) C Cleaner and so on. Most of these programs are Freeware, so of course they are "FREE!"
I'm not sure what I will use the machine for, I could use it as a file server? but for now, it is a toy to play with! Other than a little bit of cleaning this rig didn't need too much, there is a fan vibration, but I'll take care of that later on.
So, the vibration? It turns out I broke the CPU fan while cleaning the computer, DOH! I was fortunate enough to have another one to replace it with.
After all of the installation, I did all the cleaning and de-fragmenting, a nice little computer to play with, not sure what it will become yet?
I may look into a video card for this one, the maximum memory is 1,024Mb, the video card, even if it was only 128Mr or 256Mb would take a load off the memory of the computer and improve its performance, nothing major, but it would run much better. GPC Computer in G.R. has some used cards, I could pick one up for just a few bucks?

I had an interview last Friday, I will hear either way by this Friday! Then today another company called and asked me to do some testing, an hour and a half later and I am done and waiting for another phone call.

My FAVORITE chapter in the Bible:
Psalm 27
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psa 27:2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
Psa 27:3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
Psa 27:4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
Psa 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Psa 27:6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
Psa 27:7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
Psa 27:8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.
Psa 27:9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
Psa 27:10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
Psa 27:11 Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.
Psa 27:12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.
Psa 27:13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Psa 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

The Interview
Today is the day! I have an interview with a new company, I'm sure praying about this position, from the description it is something that i would very much enjoy doing. I'll post more later and update if there is an update. Please pray, I want God's will, not mine!

This, that, and the other thing!
It has been one busy week, there was a job fair here in town Tuesday, my brother and I both attended it. My brother received a call today and is starting a job next Tuesday! Praise the Lord!
I have a job interview tomorrow morning with a very good company, I'm sure praying about it. The position is a good one and I have used a considerable amount of the equipment used in the position. It is a job that would make a nerd like me happy, very technical.
Beyond the job search Charles and I have worked on our parents vehicles, Mom's needed front brake pads, rotors, grease seals, repacked the wheel bearings, and an oil change and a lube job. (10 Zerk fittings!) Then it was Dad's truck's turn, oil change, universal joints and a lube job. (Only seven Zerk's on his)
Wednesday Charles and I also did a system restore on his netbook, and notebook, both had some type of bug affecting them, and it was easier to back the files up and start all over.
I've been spending between up to three hours a day looking for jobs on-line, MichWorks, Yahoo Hot Jobs, Career Builder, Indeed.com, and a couple of other sites end me jobs through e-mail each day. Then there are the corporate career sites like Amway, Kellogg, Sara Lee, AT&T, Consumers energy, etc. they all have job postings on their sites that you can apply for, that is how I got the interview with General Motors. Once in a while there will be precious little in the e-mails, but most of the time I find two or three jobs to apply for.
I did some work on the Compaq SR5710F desktop I picked up recently, I added a media card reader. The reader was designed to go in the spare floppy drive bay, this computer didn't have one so I used a bay adapter and put it in the spare optical drive bay. Although it isn't as fast as I'd like, it is MUCH better than nothing!
Lest see? what else? A friend gave me a notebook that has a bad GPU in it, I was excited to get it, there are plenty of other components that I could use. When I opened it up however, I found it had been stripped down, the memory, hard drive and the power supply had all disappeared. The friend who gave it to me was not pleased at all, he didn't know that parts were missing, I'll have to check back on that one.
Time to head off for now, the coffee is calling me loudly already.
Have fun all!

Resurecting the dead!
Hmm, a good title considering the time of year? LOL
I pulled out my sisters dying Dell notebook and pulled the memory and optical drive out of it thinking if one of the components was bad it would show itself...NOT! I decided for giggles to try once again and install XP back on it, I had been getting the blue screen of death, just not long enough to see the error!
When I fired it back up, lo and behold it TOOK it! I'm finishing the last of the updates at the moment. There is still the issue of the power jack being loose, I'll tear it down and see how much the local computer shop will charge me to do it right. I put a new power plug in it, the solder just didn't hold, didn't have the "proper" tools!
Can't believe how fast the year has went? Not looking forward to the four letter stuff! I will go crazy if I don't have a job yet!
Have fun everyone!

Right on time.............
This was an interesting week, I installed the last two ball joints on the Bravada and took it out to have the tie rod ends looked at so I could make an appointment to have it aligned. The rest of the front end was OK, and I ended up getting it aligned right away. Later that evening half of that business burned to the ground. It is unfortunate there was a fire, no one was hurt thankfully.
The day after I had the alignment done a loud squeal started from the left rear of the truck. As it turns out, I had a frozen caliper that burned the brake pads right off. A new caliper assembly, new pads, turned both rotors. $75 later the truck is once again whole, I am NOT complaining at all, if I had that work done it would have been more like $300 minimum! The best part is that it was EASY! I did however need to borrow one of the neighbor kids feet to help me bleed the new caliper, 7 minutes and it was done. Ball joint and brake repair time? 8 hours.
The whole point is that God provided the money and ambition for all this work just in time, that's how it has worked for the last two years now. I have saved a ton of money by doing the work myself.
I installed a new wheel bearing this week also for a friend, she was quoted $225 I was able to do it for $56, it would have been $36, but the rotor broke while I was removing it and had to be replaced. It took me an hour and a half to complete her work.
I still need to do oil changes on the coupe and truck, about $50 for both with full synthetic oil and premium filters.
I enjoy taking on these projects right now, even with looking for a job I need things to keep my mind occupied. I am surfing on a computer that I was given at the moment, the hard drive had went out on it. It took me about 5 hours to clean it all up, install the new drive and ALL of my programs on it. A little bit of effort reaped a big reward, a very nice computer!
God provides what we need, when we need it, no doubt about it!

Project "Terminator"

A friend dropped of a older computer the other day, an Asus Terminator. Generally I can go on line and find out about even older computers. This one however seemed to elude me? After some research it turns out that this model of Asus was sold a a bare-bones unit. Once sold the buyer then upgraded it to their needs.
This computer has a 1.3Ghz AMD Duron processor, 1Gb. or ram, a DVD drive, LAN card and an "amazing" 4 USB ports! (For that time anyhow!) I'm amazed! and it is STINKING small, smaller than even the later compact models. I'm kinda curious as to how well this will run with all that ram in it? Once I get a hard drive for it I will be able to answer that question? I think it would make a great home server, so I need to find a good size drive for it.
Nothing new on the job market, it seems that no one wants to talk to me at the moment? God can! I still believe that.
Have great one!

Update and getting ready for winter
Update: I graduated the first week of August, I now hold an associates degree in Business Administration, and I'm thanking the Lord for it! It was a rough road, but God brought me through.
I'm still looking for a job, I was interviewing with GM, but I wasn't hired, I was however disappointed. God can!
I'm preparing for winter by getting those jobs I know will be a pain done. I finished installing the new ball joints into the Bravada, it took a total of seven hours to complete, and I saved hundreds in labor costs. I may need to do some PM on the rear caliper slides yet, I don't want them to freeze up on me again, too expensive even if I do it myself.
I washed, waxed, cleaned the tires and rims, and vacuumed both vehicles out today, they need a really good cleaning before the snow starts falling.
I've been working on a couple of projects also, I was given a computer that is only a year and a half old, the hard drive was bad. It took only a little while to find another drive and I had the computer up and running. It is a nice machine, a gift from God.
The other machine that I am working on has given me a LOAD of trouble. A major virus infected everything, so badly that I had a hard time re-loading windows on it. Finally after some creative disc swapping I was able to format the drive and re-install windows. So far I am at 160 updates, with MORE to go! LOL!
So, camping season is over, and I still need to clean the trailer, lots of things to keep me busy beyond looking for a job, THAT is first and foremost on my list.
Keeping busy even without a job......can't wait to get back to work!

Still Kicking
It's been five weeks now since I graduated. Today I received a second phone call from a company that has me praying in a HUGE way. It would be a dream job to be honest. I can handle a dream!
I've applied for over 100 jobs in the last five weeks, LOTS of sites to register with.
There are some really good job sites out there, Monster, Indeed. com, Yahoo hot jobs, etc. The only thing is that you can spend four hours a day sorting through the jobs. It is almost a job looking for a job!
I hope to be employed SOON!! I need to work!

Done!
So this week I graduated with an associates degree in business administration, I had to do it in fifteen month's, that's all the time I was allowed through TRA. If you are starting college after 40, you will be surprised how different it is from when you were 18, your work ethic is completely different. I graduated with a 3.58 GPA, so I did it with honors!
I had already started putting in resume's weeks ago in anticipation of my graduation. I put another 20resumes in this weekend. I had one callback, I was not qualified enough, and an e-mail from another company with the same news. I have a load of resumes out there, and I plan to submit many more. There is something out there for me, just need to find it!
Have a great one!

I had one callback, I was not qualified enough, and an e-mail from another company with the same news. I have a load of resumes out there, and I plan to submit many more. There is something out there for me, just need to find it!
Have a great one!

Still kicking!
WOW! I can't believe it has been so long since I've posted.....College has kept me quite busy! I am now four weeks away from graduation, and more than ready to get back to the business of working!
I have been applying for positions now for a few weeks, I applied for one today, a position that I want quite badly! It is in God's hands now, time to wait and see.
I have been without a job now for the last 21 month's, God has provided more than I ever expected, so much so I don't even know where to start! God is still in control! no matter what we may think! He IS in control!
I'll try to post more soon, and let people know where I am in my search for a job.

Almost time!
It is almost time to get the trailer opened up and everything ready to go! I can't WAIT! I want to play! I want to play!
20 day's now till it happens! I will be there before for certain, I'll have to hold back in a big way to keep from sneaking up there and spending the night with no one knowing! LOL! I'm not kidding!
One of my classes for the semester is ending this week, it will be nice to drop off a few credit hours, I can get more done then! and there is PLENTY to do!
Later all!

Fun at the Lake!

I went up to the campgrounds today to meet with all of the other campers there, it was so nice to see everyone again, the only problem is that I want to camp NOW!
My trailer looked so lonely frozen in a snow drift, I wanted to fire up the heater and enjoy myself for a while, even though I knew that it was impossible. The trailer almost looks as though it is adrift in a sea of snow, there is even a wave of snow near the back of the trailer! Even the canoe seems to be calling me at the moment, COME PLAY! COME PLAY!
I did manage to have some fun other than meeting with friends, I drove the Bravada back to the trailer, the snow was 9 or 10 inches deep, the Bravada and I both enjoyed driving through the untouched snow around the campgrounds, there were spots that is was 14 inches deep, even then the trusty old Bravada endured!
I am looking forward to camping once again, I seem to sleep like a baby at the lake, I don't wake up even once during the night, at the house I wake up as many as 7 times in 8 hours...quite frustrating....
Then there is the required campfires, I'll post a short video of the last campfire of the season, so relaxing!
I can't wait! 76 days to go!!!
I should head off for now, it s near time to get ready for Church, which by the way I enjoy as much as camping!
Later all!!!

Critters in the yard
I wish there were a way for me to get some good pictures of the snow in my back yard, I don't think there is a single inch that doesn't have some type f animal paw/hoof print on it. I put out about 10 pounds of cracked corn for the squirrels two days ago, when I arrived home at 4:00pm it was all gone, there are some very hungry creatures out there right now.
I'm "hoping" that moving my bird feeder will help to keep the squirrels out of it, those little monsters are messy! I don't mind them eating out of the feeder, it's the mess that I mind! There has been as much as a pound of bird food on the ground from the squirrels throwing it down, little piggy's anyhow LOL!
I guess it is time to head off, class starts in half an hour and I want to get there early, stuff to do!!!
